A Children's Bathroom That Grows Up Gracefully: In Conversation with Panorama Architects

Designing for children is one of the trickiest briefs in interiors. Lean too hard into the fun and you're left with a room they'll outgrow by their next birthday; play it too safe and you lose the joy entirely. This children's bathroom, designed and built by Panorama Architects, threads that needle beautifully.

"The intention was to create a bright, playful and uplifting space, while maintaining a sense of calm and softness through the palette and materials, so that it doesn't feel overly naive," the team at Panorama told us, and it's a philosophy you can read in every surface of the room.

A palette of soft greens

The scheme is built around sage, a shade that manages to feel fresh and fun without ever tipping into nursery territory. In the shower enclosure, our slim format, Seashell tiles are laid vertically in alternating bands of soft Seashell Tea and Seashell Snow, creating a gentle candy-stripe effect that draws the eye upward and makes the space feel taller. It's playful, but the muted tones and handmade-look variation in the glaze keep it grown-up.

Layering pattern with restraint

Above the vanity, the mood shifts to something softer still: watercolour-style botanical motifs in washed-out greens and neutrals. Paired with the plain Seashell Tea brick tiles below, separated by a crisp black pencil trim, the effect is layered rather than busy. It's a masterclass in mixing pattern.

Details that delight

The joy is in the small things. A bespoke vanity painted in a matching sage green, finished with heart-shaped pulls. A softly irregular, organic-shaped mirror that echoes the hand-drawn feel of the botanical tiles. Underfoot, a tumbling chequerboard floor in green and white adds movement and a hint of mischief, the one place the scheme lets itself be properly playful.

The result is a bathroom that will delight a five-year-old and still feel considered when they're fifteen: bright and uplifting, but anchored by calm, natural tones and honest materials.
